The First Supper is a Christian children's book with family interaction and recipes.
Although the author has written a few books previously, with this work from her heart, she has managed in a unique and charming way to bring to life one of the Christian worlds’ most compelling stories. The title itself is revealing as to her view of this wondrous event; Mary and Joseph traveling to their appointment with destiny. They didn’t know what lay ahead for them. Only that Mary had been told she was carrying a gift to the world.
The first thing that catches your eye are the brilliant illustrations that bring the characters and story to life. “The First Supper!” brings the reader into a world where the story of Christ begins. In this writing, the story is told from the perspective of Naomi, wife of the innkeeper, Nabil.
Carrying the hastily gathered meal, Naomi started toward the manger where Nabil had told the young couple they could rest for the night. She was surprised by the brilliant light that was shining from the manger. She enters to find the baby had been born, the source of the amazing light! All the barn animals were gathered in quiet reverence!
Basic lessons are presented in a way that are easy for young children to understand. One lesson begins with and circles around Naomi, the central character, by her actions, demonstrates the joy of giving without a thought of what she will get in return. Reminds us about the unselfish act of ‘entertaining strangers unaware’. The story unfolds in an easily understandable way the reader will enjoy sharing.
In this day of all the technology that surrounds our children, it is even more important that we, as parents and guardians, take a few minutes here and there to back up a bit you might say. Ask yourself how long has it been since you sat down with your children and read a book that allowed you to open up such a meaningful discussion.
As a bonus for the reader and young people there is a section in the back of the book telling about the typical foods of the day. Foods that may well have been part of “The First Supper!”. You can further enjoy the experience of this story with your children by planning your own ‘First Supper!’ Perhaps you might even enhance the feeling by dressing in the clothes of the day.
In my humble opinion, every home, church library should have this book to share. The story of “The First Supper!” is timeless.
